The goal | The subject aims to provide students the knowledge about application of molecular genetics techniques in parentage testing, kinship analysis and affirming of breed affiliation.
The outcome | Student should understand the role of parentage testing in animal pedigree verification and breeding programs. Finnaly, student have to be acquainted with the factors that affect the accuracy of the test for parentage determining and pedigree analysis. Student should become capable to perform parentage testing, kinship analysis and affirming of breed affiliation.

Contents of lectures | Theoretical instructions: From Mendel to molecular markers. Types of molecular markers. Nuclear and mitochondrial DNA and correlation analyses between genetic polymorphisms and specific phenotypic characteristics. Application of data obtained by analyses of DNA polymorphisms in determination of kinship, parentage and pedigree.
Contents of exercises | Independent research activities: DNA isolation, amplification of conserved regions of mitochondrial DNA, amplification of nuclear DNA microsatellites (PCR, real-time PCR, RT-PCR, PCR-RFLP, LAMP), visualisation of results by gel electrophoresis and DNA sequencing, analysis of the obtained results with aimed to kinship, parentage and pedigree analyses.
