The goal		The course aims to make students capable for proper breeding and care of honey bee colonies and for maintenance of health and productive honey bee colonies as well as to prepare them how to independently solve common problems in beekeeping. In addition, this course gives the basis for attendance and appreciation of the subject Diseases of honey bees.
The outcome		Student has to learn the social organization and the development of the honey bee colony; morphology and communication of honey bee colony members. Student has to understand basic principles of breeding and care of bees according to seasonal requirements and development of honey bee colony, as well as the basic principles of queen breeding and selection. Student has to be skilled for independent management the apiary and professional communication with beekeepers.

Contents of lectures		Origin, distribution, taxonomy and races of the honey bee. Structure and social organization of honey bee colony, biology of honey bee colony members (4). Orientation of honey bees in the environment. Communication among members of honey bee colony (pheromones and bee “dance“) (2). Honey bee pasture and honey bee products (4). Genetics, selection and behaviour of honey bees (3). Beekeeping management (2).
Contents of exercises		Construction and structure of bee nest. Dynamics of honey bee colony development (6). Selection of appropriate place for apiary (2). Beekeeping equipment and accessories. Beekeeping house. Hive types (4). Hive setup for honey harvest (4). Frame assembling and wiring, embedding of comb foundations (4). Establishing and maintenance of honey bee colonies. Season doings in the apiary (4). Queen and swarm rearing (6).

Methods of teaching		Theoretical teaching with interactive learning, with use of audio-visual methods (PowerPoint presentations, films), demonstrations and practical tuition on the apiary and workshop of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Biology.
