The goalThe subject aims to provide students the knowledge about application of molecular genetics methods in exploration of ecology, behaviour and protection of honey bees.
The outcomeStudent should become capable for application of molecular genetic methods in analyses of behaviour and ecology of bees, as well as in exploration of bee pathogens aimed to maintain health honey bee colonies.
      Contents
Contents of lecturesTheoretical instructions: Genetic analyses of honey bees. Mitochondrial and nuclear DNA – evaluation of genetic diversity and protection of honey bee ecotypes. Gene flow as an indicator of migratory beekeeping, commercial breeding and queen introduction. Molecular genetics in bee breeding and selection programs aimed to increase disease resistance. Behavioural genetics of bees. Heritability coefficient of hygienic and grooming behaviours in suppression of honey bee mite reproduction. Molecular characterization and typization of pathogens of bees and bee brood.
Contents of exercisesIndependent research activities: DNA isolation, amplification of conserved regions of mitochondrial DNA, amplification of nuclear DNA microsatellites (PCR, real-time PCR, RT-PCR, PCR-RFLP, LAMP), visualisation of results by gel electrophoresis and DNA sequencing, analysis of the obtained results with an aim to analyse genome and molecular diversity of bees. Molecular detection and identification of bee pathogens and parasites.
